“Quality transitions that are well-prepared and child-centred, managed by trained staff collaborating with one another, and guided by an appropriate curriculum, enhance the likelihood that the positive impacts of early learning and childcare will last through primary school and beyond.”
“The transition to school together with the transition from home to an ECEC setting are the first occasions in which children experience a big cultural change, in the people around them, the ways in which they interact, their number of peers, the types of activity they engage in, and their physical surroundings.”
Day One
- Your child’s keyworker will welcome you and your child at reception, they will them to their peg and give them their nursery badge.
- Your child will be allocated a nursery bag at their peg. I suggest you fill the bag with some changes of clothes, underwear and wipes. We also request that your child has a pair of wellies for outdoor play.
- Please provide a pair of soft shoes for indoors, I request that this isn’t slippers or crocs.
- You will be given paperwork home to complete. Please be advised that you can not leave your child at nursery until all paperwork is completed and returned. We particularly need to know about medical, allergies and dietary requirements.
- You and your child will spend one hour in the playroom. The keyworker will spend time with your child to build a relationship, along with the opportunity to develop effective 2-way communication with you as, parents/carers.
Day Two
- Your child’s keyworker will welcome them in the playroom. Depending on their interaction and security you may be able to sit in the corridor for an hour or so.
- If you and your child appear to be confident and secure then keyworker will use their professional judgement and allow you to leave if you live local or can stay in the local area for an agreed period of time e.g., 9-11.30am.
- Your child’s keyworker works shifts, they may arrange a 10 o’clock start for your child if they are on a late shift.
- Parent/Carer can choose for their child to start at an earlier time with another staff member from the playroom team supporting, until keyworker arrives at 10am.
Day Three
- Your child can stay for lunch if they have allowed you to be out of the playroom for a longer period of time on day 2.
- Keyworkers may encourage the use of transitional objects, as they can help your child to make sense of and make connections with their new surroundings.
- Please note - a child that has attended nursery before or a sibling of a previous nursery child may settle quicker however this is not always the case.
- After the 3rd day staff will build up the child’s time e.g., 8am start or stay longer after lunch on their full day. Please note – your child’s settling process will be guided by your child and will be taken at their pace. It is crucial that we do not rush this process.
- Keyworker will remain in close contact with your child to support building deeper attachments and supporting routines. Keyworker will support the child in building relationships with other staff.
